STRIVE (Socialization, Transition, Reflection, Innovation, Vocation, Education) serves teens and young adults with developmental disabilities throughout Maine, primarily from York and Cumberland counties.  Before STRIVE, young adults with these life challenges fell into a total void in terms of services after high school, often sitting at home waiting for opportunities that will never come, or at best for being placed in a menial job regardless of interest or capability.  STRIVE creates community members who are productive, contributing members of our society, rather than being completely dependent on it.  STRIVE members are empowered to learn, vote, volunteer, foster friendships and other relationships, work, and fully participate in society.  Community-based employment training programs help STRIVE members to gain useful and marketable job skills and experiences, as well as the opportunity to learn and refine all skills necessary to live independently, taking measured risks in a safe, supportive environment.

STRIVE U is an innovative and nationally-recognized intensive two-year program.  In partnership with the USM campus, it follows a traditional post-graduate model but focuses mostly on teaching people with developmental disabilities how to lead autonomous lives.  To date, 100% of STRIVE U graduates are living independently and are competitively employed.  Additionally, STRIVE U is tremendously cost-effective.  A "typical" annual state expenditure to support an adult with developmental disabilities is $45,000; conversely, STRIVE U graduates need just $5,000 in state aid.  This program is a success by every quantitative, and qualitative, yardstick.

Through its programs, clients have countless opportunities for learning and growth, inside and outside the classroom.  By creating lifelong learners, providing opportunities for socialization and peer support, emphasizing public and private partnerships, and lifting the bar on past limitations, STRIVE provides independence - tailored to each program participant's needs.  Through Friday Night Social events, educational series, wellness classes, a summer and vacation Day Camp, BookWorks, and the Tweens program, STRIVE serves more than 700 young people throughout Maine.  STRIVE continues to grow and help generate possibilities and opportunities.
