Character quiz promotes literacy in time for summer

(NEWS CENTER) -- There are all sorts of personality quizzes online, from alter Disney Princess personalities to what European country best fits a person. For those wanting to find their children's book alter ego, the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, launched the "Which Children's Book Character Are You?" quiz just in time for the start of summer reading.

"Nearly half of all children born to a mother lacking a high school diploma are not ready to start kindergarten," said Doro Bush Koch, honorary co-chair of the Barbara Bush Foundation. "Studies show that their literacy gap will only widen over time. Teaching families to read is one of the most important things we can do to help them succeed in life, which is why the Foundation has been supporting family literacy programs for more than 25 years."

There are six quick questions on the quiz and results vary from Sam from Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss to Clifford from Clifford the Big Red Dog.

Many public libraries across Maine sponsor summer reading programs. According to a study by the University of Minnesota, Maine has the second most libraries per-capita in the U.S. and ties for fourth for the highest literacy rates. Bookstores and websites also sponsor reading programs, and many include incentives, like a free book. For more information about how to participate in summer reading programs, see the links below.
