Mary Dysart Hartt to run a marathon in every state

Hermon, ME (NEWS CENTER) -- Dysart's truck stop is famous on Route 95 in Maine. Many diners who stop there are greeted by Mary Dysart Hartt.

Despite, or perhaps because, the restaurant is famous for comfort food that truckers love, Mary began running ten years ago just before she turned 50. Now she has run 21 marathons and intends to run one in every state before she is through.

"Running is a reason," to get up in the morning. She also thinks it's important because she around Dysart's food fifty hours a week. Dysart's has been dishing out large portions of comfort food to truckers for almost fifty years. Mary has introduced healthier entrees including a gluten free menu. Still, most stop at Dysart's for more traditional favorites such as poutine, which is basically french fries and cheese covered with gravy.

Photography is another of Mary's favorite past times. She is an active member of the Eastern Maine Camera Club. She just won the New England award for the best black and white still print of 2014.

"It's a tree in my backyard. I have a bench out there. I've been planning on going out to photograph it so it was sort of a planned thing. I just waited for a big snowstorm, rode out on a snowmobile out and took a picture of it," she said.

Mary's next marathon will be this fall in North or South Dakota. On out of the way trips, she takes some time to do photography as well.

Next year, she'll turn 60, but plans to keep on trucking and hopes to finish her marathon of marathons in "five or six years."

The next time you drive through Bangor on Interstate 95, you might want to check out Mary's photography which adorns the walls at Dysart's Restaurant. It may be the only gallery in the state where you can see great photography while dining on poutine, meatloaf or a hot turkey sandwich smothered in gravy.
