Bruce Glasier is the Sports Director for NEWS CENTER. Bruce has been with NEWS CENTER since 1977, when he started as the sports anchor of the very first weekend newscast on WCSH 6, co-hosted the morning show on WCSH Radio, hosted a sports talk show, and did play-by-play on sporting events televised on WCSH 6. Just a year and a half later, Bruce became the sports anchor for NEWS CENTER at 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., a position he continues to hold today. Bruce has received much recognition for his work in broadcasting, including honors awarded by the Maine Association of Broadcasters (MAB), the Associated Press (AP), as well as the New Hampshire "Golden Mike" Award for reporting and anchoring. He was named Maine Sportscaster of the Year in 1987. The MAB and AP have also recognized the ever-popular "5th Quarter," the "often-imitated, never-duplicated, original, and most comprehensive" high school football wrap-up show in Maine which he co-hosts with NEWS CENTER's Lee Goldberg and john Smist.
Bruce is often asked about the most famous person he has ever met. "I'd have to say, although Ted Williams was always my idol, that it's Muhammed Ali. Ali was in Lewiston for the 30th anniversary of his win over Sonny Liston at the CCCC. I spent an hour with him and with former world champion Floyd Patterson, just talking boxing. I was fortunate enough to host the banquet for Ali and 600 fans, as well as serve as ring announcer for the boxing card that night on ESPN."
Bruce's position at NEWS CENTER has allowed him to attend exciting sporting events across the country, including: Red Sox spring trainings in Winter Haven and Fort Myers, Cleveland Indians spring training (when WCSH 6 broadcasted Maine Guides games) in Tucson, and NCAA women's basketball in Charlotte. Bruce broadcasted live for 10 days from Super Bowl 20 in New Orleans; he covered the ALCS in 1986 in Boston and Anaheim; and he covered the 1986 World Series with the Red Sox and Mets and, in fact, was in the Mets bullpen when Bill Buckner made his infamous error.
Bruce is from Portland. He graduated from Portland High School and received a BA in Journalism from the University of Maine. He lives in Cape Elizabeth with his wife Marita and faithful dog Gillie. Bruce has two children: Paul lives in Salem, MA, and Leslie lives with her husband Charles and Bruce's two grandchildren (Tucker and Mackenzie) in Gorham. He enjoys woodworking, reading and landscaping.
